Spray Tan Aftercare: How to Make Your Tan Last Longer
Share
You've just had a beautiful spray tan — now the clock is ticking. With the right aftercare, a professional spray tan can last 7 to 10 days. Without it, you might be looking at 3 to 5 days before it starts fading unevenly. Here's exactly what to do (and what to avoid) to get the most out of your tan.
How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?
A spray tan typically lasts 7–10 days with proper care. Your skin naturally sheds dead cells every day, and as it does, the tan fades. The goal of aftercare is to slow that process down and keep the fade even.
Factors that affect longevity:
- Skin prep before the tan (exfoliation = longer-lasting result)
- Moisturising routine after the tan
- Water exposure (swimming, long baths, heavy sweating)
- The DHA percentage of the solution used
Higher DHA percentages (like our 13% Dark Solution) tend to produce deeper colour that fades more gradually than lighter formulas.
The First 8–12 Hours: The Development Window
This is the most critical period. During development:
- ❌ Don't shower — water stops the DHA reaction
- ❌ Don't sweat — avoid exercise, saunas, or steam rooms
- ❌ Don't get wet — rain, swimming pools, the sea
- ❌ Don't wear tight clothing — it rubs the solution off
- ✅ Do stay in a cool, dry environment
- ✅ Do wear loose, dark clothing
Your First Shower After a Spray Tan
When you do shower for the first time, use lukewarm water (not hot) and a gentle, sulphate-free body wash. You'll notice the cosmetic bronzer washing off — this is normal. Your actual DHA tan is underneath and will continue to deepen slightly over the next few hours.
Pat your skin dry with a towel — don't rub.
Daily Aftercare Routine to Extend Your Tan
Moisturise every day. This is the single most important thing you can do. Use an oil-free, alcohol-free moisturiser on your entire body after every shower. Dry skin sheds faster, which means your tan fades faster.
Avoid long baths and swimming. Prolonged water exposure breaks down DHA faster. Showers are better than baths. If you swim, moisturise immediately after.
Use a gentle body wash. Harsh soaps and exfoliating washes will strip your tan. Stick to a mild, hydrating formula.
Avoid oil-based products. Body oils, oil-based moisturisers, and oil-based makeup removers will break down your tan quickly.
When to Book Your Next Tan
Most clients re-tan every 7–10 days to maintain a consistent colour. Before your next appointment, do a light exfoliation to remove any remaining patchy tan, then follow the full pre-tan prep routine for best results.
