A Complete Guide to Self Tanners: How They Work and How to Apply Them

Why self tan is the smarter glow

A sun-kissed glow is one of the best confidence boosts there is, but baking in the sun or on a sunbed comes at a cost to your skin. Self tanners give you the same golden result without the UV damage, and they have come a long way from the streaky orange formulas of years past. Today's self tanners are quick-drying, streak-free and shade-matched, so you can choose exactly how deep you want your tan to go.

How self tanners work

Most self tanners use an ingredient called DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a sugar-based compound that reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin to create a bronzed colour. The result typically develops over 4 to 8 hours and gradually fades as your skin naturally renews itself. There is no sun exposure involved, and no melanin production, which is why self tan is considered the safe way to glow all year round.

Choosing your shade

The golden rule: your self tan should look like you, only on holiday. A shade that is too dark for your natural skin tone can look less natural, so start with the shade closest to your own skin.

  • Fair: For light skin tones, or if you are new to self tanning and want a subtle, buildable glow.
  • Medium: The all-rounder. Suits most skin tones and delivers a believable golden tan.
  • Dark: For deeper or naturally tanned skin tones, or for anyone who wants maximum depth of colour.

Your prep and application routine

The difference between a flawless tan and a patchy one is almost always preparation. Follow these steps for an even, natural-looking result:

  1. Exfoliate 24 hours before. Remove dry, dead skin so the tan has an even surface to develop on. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees and ankles.
  2. Shave or wax before, not after. Hair removal opens the pores and can interfere with how the tan sets, so do it a day ahead.
  3. Moisturise dry areas. Apply a light barrier cream to elbows, knees, wrists, ankles and hands so these drier areas do not grab too much colour.
  4. Apply with a tanning mitt. A tanning applicator mitt blends the mousse evenly and protects your palms from staining. Work in long, sweeping strokes, one section at a time.
  5. Let it develop. Wait 4 to 8 hours, or overnight, before showering. Avoid water, sweating and tight clothing while the tan develops.

Making your tan last

A well-applied self tan usually lasts 5 to 7 days. To stretch it out, keep showers short and lukewarm, skip harsh exfoliants, and moisturise daily. When you are ready for the next application, exfoliate gently to remove the fading tan so your new layer goes on evenly.
